It looks like Asus is channeling some Kinect with its WAVI Xtion motion controller, which is expected to be marketed by October this year. This device was created in partnership with PrimeSense, the same company that partnered with Microsoft to develop Kinect, which is why the similarities and capabilities between the two are uncanny.
According to Asus, the WAVI Xtion would bring the “fun and function” of the Kinect to the PC. The company even hopes that the device would take desktop PCs to a whole new level of interactivity, just like what the Kinect did to the Xbox 360.
This is not the first time Asus looked to the gaming industry for inspiration. It launched the Eee Stick several years after the Wii, targetting buyers of its popular Eee netbooks. The Eee Stick functions like Nintendo’s Wii Remotes for netbooks, but consumers apparently were not buying it.
Digitimes reports that the Asus WAVI Xtion would be priced between $250 and $300, which is more expensive than Kinect’s $150 price tag. The device will reportedly be available first in China, where the Xbox 360 is banned. The exact release date, meanwhile, remains unclear.
